3. Como
Stay
About the destination: Lake Como, nestled in the foothills of the Italian Alps, is one of Europe’s most glamorous yet serene escapes. The town of Como sits at the southern tip of the lake, acting as both a charming base and a gateway to the surrounding villages. Its historic center is a mix of medieval streets, lively piazzas, and elegant boutiques, all framed by mountains and sparkling water. Whether you’re here for a day trip from Milan or a longer stay, Como offers a perfect blend of nature, culture, and style. Begin your visit in Piazza Duomo, home to the impressive Como Cathedral (Duomo di Como), a masterpiece that blends Gothic and Renaissance elements. Wander around the old town’s narrow cobbled lanes to discover local cafés, traditional trattorie, and shops selling silk—one of Como’s most famous exports. Don’t miss the Broletto, the medieval town hall beside the cathedral, and the lakeside promenade that invites leisurely walks at sunset. For sweeping views, take the funicular from Como to Brunate, a hilltop village overlooking the lake. From there, you’ll enjoy panoramic vistas of the water, the Alps, and on clear days even the skyline of Milan. Active travelers can follow well-marked hiking trails, while others may prefer lingering over a cappuccino at a terrace café. Back down by the lake, join a boat tour or hop on a public ferry to explore nearby gems like Cernobbio, Bellagio, and Varenna, each with its own character and lakeside villas. Como also makes an excellent year‑round destination. Spring and summer are ideal for boat trips, lakeside aperitivos, and garden visits, while autumn brings quieter streets and vivid colors in the surrounding hills. Even in winter, the town has a cozy charm, with fewer crowds, atmospheric mists over the lake, and easy train connections to Milan for museum visits and shopping. Whatever the season, Como combines Italian elegance with natural beauty in a way that’s hard to forget.

4. Peschiera del Garda
Stay
About the destination: Peschiera offers its visitors visible signs of every historical era through which it has lived: from the age of pile-dwellers (stilt-house inhabitants) during the Roman Age, and from the early to late Medieval years in which the Scala Family ruled, to the period of Venetian nomination, then the Napoleonic Empire, and finally to the Hapsburg rule, when Peschiera was one of the four fortresses of the Austrian Quadrilatero, at the time the most powerful defensive system in Italy. Peschiera was equally-important during Italian Unification and then, in the First World War. Such is attributed to its geographic position, leading to its use as a strategic hub in terms of communications between the Alpine and Padania regions of the country, in addition to those between east and west. That is, Peschiera lies on Lake Garda’s southernmost point (part of the Veneto Region and Verona Province), where the Lake becomes the Mincio Bayou and, at the same time, a tributary of the Po River running into the Adriatic Sea.

5. Brescia
Stop
About the destination: Brescia, often overlooked in favor of nearby Milan or Lake Garda, is one of Northern Italy’s most rewarding “hidden” cities. Nestled between vineyards and mountains in the Lombardy region, it blends Roman ruins, medieval lanes, and elegant piazzas with a lived‑in, authentic atmosphere. It’s compact enough to explore on foot, yet rich enough in culture and history to keep you busy for several days. The historic center is an open‑air museum. Start at Piazza della Loggia, framed by Renaissance arcades and the ornate Palazzo della Loggia, then stroll to Piazza Paolo VI to see the unusual duo of cathedrals: the round Romanesque Old Cathedral (Duomo Vecchio) and the grand Baroque New Cathedral (Duomo Nuovo). A short walk away, the UNESCO‑listed monastery complex of Santa Giulia and the nearby Capitolium temple reveal Brescia’s Roman origins, with mosaics, archaeological finds, and atmospheric cloisters. Above the city, the medieval Brescia Castle crowns Cidneo Hill and offers some of the best views over terracotta rooftops and the distant Alps. The castle grounds, with their towers, ramparts, and museums, are perfect for a slow afternoon wandering or a sunset picnic. Down below, stylish shops, traditional cafés, and lively aperitivo spots give the city a contemporary buzz—especially in the early evening when locals fill the squares. Brescia also makes an excellent base for exploring the region. The Franciacorta wine country, famous for its sparkling wines, lies just to the west, while the shores of Lake Iseo and Lake Garda are within easy reach by car or train. Whether you’re interested in history, food and wine, or simply experiencing an Italian city with fewer tourists and plenty of character, Brescia is a rewarding stop on any northern Italy itinerary.
